Inclusive Lesson Plan Examples

Ancient African Kingdoms

History | Year 7

Objective:

Understand that Africa had advanced civilizations before European colonisation.

Lesson & Activity:

Introduce the Kingdom of Mali and Mansa Musa's wealth. Compare to European societies of the same period. Activity: Research and present on another African kingdom.

Why it Matters:

Counters the narrative that Africa was 'uncivilised' before colonisation and allows students to see their heritage positively.

Analysing Poetry

English | Year 9

Objective:

Analyse the use of metaphor and imagery in poetry.

Lesson & Activity:

Read and discuss John Agard's 'Half-Caste' to challenge racial terminology. Analyse metaphors and language. Creative task: Write a poem responding to a stereotype.

Why it Matters:

Uses a powerful text to address identity and racism directly, validating the experiences of Black and mixed-race students.

Scientists and Inventors

Science | Year 5

Objective:

Learn about diverse contributors to science and technology.

Lesson & Activity:

Introduce African scientists like Philip Emeagwali (supercomputing) and Wangari Maathai (environmental science). Research activity: Students choose one scientist and create a presentation.

Why it Matters:

Challenges the assumption that science is 'white' and shows African students they belong in STEM fields.

Identity and Belonging

PSHE | Year 8

Objective:

Explore personal identity and understand intersectionality.

Lesson & Activity:

Conduct an identity mapping activity. Watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 'Danger of a Single Story' TED talk. Reflection: 'When have you been reduced to a single story?'

Why it Matters:

Gives African students space to explore their complex identities and builds empathy among all students.
